Why XIRR is the Only Accurate Return Metric for Mutual Fund SIPs
Unlike a fixed deposit or one-time stock purchase where money is deposited once, a mutual fund portfolio undergoes multiple cash inflows (monthly SIPs, bonus top-ups) and occasional partial withdrawals over many years. Simple CAGR fails because each installment has stayed in the market for a different length of time.
The Extended Internal Rate of Return (XIRR) Formula:
XIRR finds the single discount rate \(r\) that equates the Net Present Value (NPV) of all dated cash flows to zero:
Where \(C_i\) is the cash flow amount on date \(d_i\), and \(d_0\) is the date of the very first transaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to common questions on formulas, taxation, and investing strategy.
Q1. Where can I find my mutual fund portfolio's official XIRR?
You can find your exact consolidated XIRR in your monthly Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) issued by CAMS or KFintech, or through AMFI-registered distributor platforms like ApnaMutualFund.
Q2. Why does my recent SIP show a very high or very low XIRR?
When an investment is less than 6 to 12 months old, short-term market volatility gets annualized over 365 days, leading to distorted outlier figures (e.g., +80% or -45%). XIRR normalizes and provides true analytical insight once held for 18+ months.
Q3. Can XIRR be negative?
Yes. If your current portfolio valuation is lower than your total cumulative net invested capital, your XIRR will be negative, reflecting unrealized portfolio paper losses.
